SPECIALITY THAT DEALS WITH THE SUPPORTING TISSUES OF THE TOOTH, GUMS AND BONE
It is essential to have a healthy gum to have good oral health and an acceptable smile aesthetics.
The periodontal disease that initially starts with gingival bleeding (which is reversible) and has various stages, evolves towards bone loss (when generalized, is usually irreversible), dental mobility and in extreme cases in the loss of the teeth.
Patients often comment “my gums have always bled”. Gingival bleeding is pathological and therefore should not be perpetuated.
This is why early diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease is so important so that its signs can be reversed. There are three primary levels in the treatment of periodontal disease and a higher level should not commence until the previous one is finished.
In this first phase, a supra-gingival cleansing is performed, a visible part of the tooth.
SCRAPING AND ROOT PLANING
The next step of treatment is scraping and root planing (curettage), infra-gingival cleansing, non-visible part of the tooth.
In any case, the patient will be instructed in a proper brushing technique.
Once the two previous treatment stages are covered, should the problem persists, and as long as the patient meets appropriate clinical conditions, periodontal surgery would be performed. It is an open surgery, to access and treat places not reached in the previous procedures.
